Casted Steel Balls – Industrial Grinding Media | High/Medium/Low Chrome Cast Balls

Casted steel balls are a core category of grinding steel ball and essential industrial grinding media, classified by chromium content into ultra high chromium cast balls, high chrome grinding media balls, medium chromium cast balls, low chromium cast balls and chromium-free cast balls—each engineered to meet the distinct grinding demands of global industrial sectors. The quality of cast steel balls is determined by premium raw material selection and rigorous production process control; even for identical specifications, pricing varies significantly among grinding media manufacturers due to differences in raw material costs, process standards and quality control systems.

Casted steel balls feature outstanding high temperature resistance and consistent internal and external hardness, making them the optimal grinding solution for the cement industry and the primary choice for most cement plants worldwide. In contrast, forged steel balls are the preferred option for mines, thermal power stations and other heavy industrial grinding applications where higher impact toughness is required.

Key Product Features of Casted Steel Balls

  1. Impact toughness value is relatively low, with high chrome grinding media ballsonly reaching 3-6J/cm²
  2. Surface finish is less smooth than forged steel balls, with a higher breakage tendency—not suitable for large-diameter mills (especially above 3.5 meters)
  3. Exclusive for dry milloperations, perfectly matching the dry grinding process requirements of cement, chemical and non-metallic ore processing

Product Classification & National Standard Quality Indicators

All our cast steel balls are produced in strict compliance with national industrial quality standards, with clearly defined chromium/carbon content ranges, mandatory hardness (HRC) and impact value requirements. Targeted high-temperature quenching and tempering processes are applied to each grade to eliminate casting stress, and surface characteristics provide an intuitive way to verify heat treatment completion.

1. High Chrome Grinding Media Balls

  • Chemical Composition: Chromium ≥10.0%, Carbon 1.80%-3.20%
  • National Standard Requirements: Hardness ≥58HRC, Impact value ≥3.0J/cm²
  • Heat Treatment: Mandatory high-temperature quenching & tempering (oil quenching/air quenching for mainstream processes)
  • Quality Criterion: Tested hardness <54HRC = unquenched (unqualified product)

2. Medium Chromium Cast Balls

  • Chemical Composition: Chromium 3.0%-7.0%, Carbon 1.80%-3.20%
  • National Standard Requirements: Impact value ≥2.0J/cm², Hardness ≥47HRC
  • Heat Treatment: Mandatory high-temperature tempering (to eliminate casting stress)
  • Quality Criterion: Dark red surface = tempered; metallic luster = untempered (unqualified product)

3. Low Chromium Cast Balls

  • Chemical Composition: Chromium 0.5%-2.5%, Carbon 1.80%-3.20%
  • National Standard Requirements: Hardness ≥45HRC, Impact value ≥1.5J/cm²
  • Heat Treatment: Mandatory high-temperature tempering (to eliminate casting stress)
  • Quality Criterion: Dark red surface = tempered; metallic luster = untempered (unqualified product)

Applied Fields of Casted Steel Balls

As a cost-effective and versatile mining grinding media, cast steel balls are widely used in large-scale grinding and milling operations across global industries, including:

  • Cement plants & building materials industry
  • Chemical plants & non-metallic ore processing
  • Thermal power plants & coal grinding
  • Quartz sand plants & silica sand processing
